Our Client is looking for an individual who will see themselves as an integral part of the long term future of the company, and an essential requirement is someone with extensive experience of multi-site operations management from manufacturing processing or engineering processing industries such as recycling, materials processing , metals or bottling etc.

The ideal candidate will have high levels of emotional intelligence; to motivate site teams, managers and the board to ensure both personal and professional success for the business and the staff. The ability to listen to teams, their suggestions regarding improvements and implement new ideas is also key

The business has seen extensive growth and success in no small part due to current procedures and policies but recognise that this role is crucial in taking the company forward and to new levels. The ideal candidate will have exceptional organisational skills together with exceptional knowledge from a highly industrialised, technologically advanced environment

Additionally must have strong understanding of compliance, health and safety legislation and maintenance management in a highly regulated market, again building on what they already do and take it further, improve productivity, improve maintenance, improve output of equipment.

The role holder will been involved in projects and decisions around the opening of new plants, machinery investment etc so a strong commercial awareness is essential.

As the company has a number of sites, the Operations Director will have to travel on a monthly basis to these sites

Overview of the role of Operations Director:

This role is part of the Senior Management Team, it is expected that the successful candidate will provide strategic and operational support to the Board of Directors and Company as a whole, by leading the Operations function.

The Operations Director works with the Technical Director, Purchasing Director, Chairman, Finance Director and Major Projects Manager to deliver the company vision and objectives.

The principal objective is to deliver the Company long term business plan by achieving operating performance targets within agreed budgets and timescales while ensuring effective working practices.

This post will require drive and commitment plus entrepreneurial and creative thinking.

The holder will operate in a challenging and dynamic environment; developing and managing the operational services that enable the business to deliver its long-term business plan.

Responsibilities for the role of Operations Director

  • Providing support and direction to each Site Manager and the Transport Manager
  • Co-ordinate the Compliance, Maintenance and HR teams on all sites
  • Work with the Major Projects Manager to develop new project concepts
  • Report regularly to Directors and other stakeholders on performance of operations function
  • Ensure all operational activities at all sites conform with statutory and organisational requirements for health and safety, quality management, environmental management, good employment practice etc
  • Monitor, measure and report on operational issues, opportunities and development plans and achievements within agreed timescales
  • Ensure operational activities are properly resourced and staffing costs are managed within agreed budgets
  • Act as the Management Representative for the Company fulfilling the requirements as defined in the ISO 9001 OSHAS 18001 and ISO 14001 quality standards
  • Work with the Technical Director and Board on the analysis of strategic opportunities and risk and propose how to exploit new business opportunities and deliver existing plans.
  • Work with other senior managers to ensure the operations departments have appropriate communication and IT provision
  • Manage, coach and develop staff; fostering an ethos of continuous professional self-development.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the Operations function achieve the production, efficiency and cost targets in order to deliver the Company long term business plan.
  • Attend and contribute to Senior Management meetings, providing input on all strategic, commercial and operational decisions as required.
  • Provide and present decision papers for the Board
  • Regularly visit all Company sites as required
  • Carry out any additional duties that may be reasonably requested from time to time
  • A thorough knowledge of best practice operations management, including Lean Manufacturing and Quality Management
  • Ability to maintain records, manage and monitor budgets and produce management reports
  • Significant experience of working at senior management level in a high volume, quality manufacturing environment
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • The ability to assess and improve operational efficiency and systems
  • The ability to develop, co-ordinate and deliver substantial investment projects
  • Strong, clear, effective communicator; in person, in writing and on the telephone
  • Analytical approach with excellent attention to detail
  • Good commercial understanding
  • A confident leader and excellent people manager with the ability to lead, manage, coach, train and develop others

Essential attributes for the role of Operations Director:

  • Proven experience of strategic and operational managemet
  • Evidence of an entrepreneurial approach/business acumen
  • Ability to develop systems and methods of work across all aspects of a production operation using IT systems where appropriate
  • Experience of working within an industrial compliance environment
  • The ability to identify problems and implement creative solutions
  • The ability to deliver good quality verbal and written communication to all staff
  • IT Literate
  • Full, clean driving license
  • WAMITAB certification would be ideal with the ability to complete the additional modules required to become certified to meet business needs
  • Recognised and accredited management qualifications
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring individuals and teams
  • Health & Safety Qualification (IOSH, NEBOSH etc.)
  • Change management processes
