On the Hunt for a Managing Director

Dissatisfied with their previous London based executive recruitment firm, Alexander Hancock were approached by a job holder who was looking to recruit a candidate for his role of Managing Director as he was soon to retire from the firm.... Their previous agency had successfully placed a candidate in the role; however, they left the firm after only three months leaving the client on the lookout for a replacement. In the absence of an offer from their previous agency offer to refund the company, the current MD decided instead to use a Manchester based agency to recruit for a replacement. He wanted a company that better understood the local market place and the culture of the city in order the identify an individual that matched their ethos.

After separate discussions with two national Manchester based agencies, Alexander Hancock were offered exclusivity on the assignment based on their “obvious passion and immediate understanding, not only of the technical expertise required, but also of the need for the person to ‘fit’ into the company.” Having been with the company since its inception, the MD wanted to pass this business on to someone who would share his view and have the ability to take it to the next level.

Based on a rigorous interview and selection process, five candidates were recommended to the firm for a first interview. All candidates were of exceptional calibre and held the skillset required to fill the position. After the initial interviews, five candidates were shortlisted to three and flew overseas for their final interview. Impressed with one candidate in particular, a decision was made on who to offer the position to. The director praised Alexander Hancock on their role in the recruitment process and commented “We were unsure initially of whether or not Alexander Hancock, having seen their size and not being an exclusively executive level recruiter, could handle such a role. Now we wish they could recruit for us in the US, we will most definitely be recommending them to our other UK based companies”.

Building a reputation in honesty and integrity

Alexander Hancock were recently approached by a client who wanted to set up a new department, consisting of four Team Managers and 20 Customer Service Executives. With a recruitment timescale of only eight weeks, the client required each candidate to be interview twice as well as attend an assessment centre.... Whilst three agencies were approached to tender on the business for the assignment, the company wanted just one agency to handle the whole process.

Since each candidate would need to be selected and pre-interviewed by our consultants before being presented to the client, the impossible task of one company recruiting 24 professionals of exceptional calibre in the short timescale provided was quickly recognised.

At a presentation with the client, Alexander Hancock explained the complexities to the client and advised them that it was in their best interest to give all three agencies a part of the assignment. Despite the short timescale, the other two companies had assured the Directors they were able to handle the assignment exclusively. Whilst the director thanked Alexander Hancock for their honesty, the business was given elsewhere.

Four weeks later, the dissatisfied client contacted Alexander Hancock to inform them that the company selected initially had been unable to keep up with their promise of providing the number and calibre of candidates they required. Due to this, the exclusive recruitment of the Team Manager roles was assigned to Alexander Hancock with immediate effect and candidates held in the agency’s database that were suitable for the Executive Roles were also considered by the client.

The assignment was successfully completed to deadline and the process highlighted the importance of managing client’s expectations and honesty of ability in the enhancement of reputation.
