Team playing and diplomacy is an essential part of working towards success, a little lesson that would help John Terry is possibly getting back his Captaincy of the England Team

It is never a good idea to undermine your Manager in public, or more relevantly for us ,when you go for an interview with a future employer. Many times candidates have lost out on roles because they were too negative at interview about their last company or Manager, even when their reasons for leaving have been totally justifiable.

Our best piece of advice in this kind of circumstance would be to focus on the positive, mention the negative but temper it.So rather than saying “ I hated my boss, he never gave me any recognition for how hard I worked, and so I want to find an employer who appreciates me”

I would suggest saying “ I am looking for a role that will allow me to offer and use all my skills in an environment where I will be appreciated and where I can contribute 100% which can sometimes be overlooked where I am at the moment”.. so rather Mr Terry than saying there is trouble in the England Camp and Capello has picked the wrong team, maybe a better response would be “ we appreciate that we are not playing to the best of our ability, that we realise the expectations of our Country are resting on our shoulders and we are going to play our socks off on Wednesday evening” maybe then you would be reconsidered for the position of Captain of England in the future!

I have been involved in Recruitment for over 25 years, and you would think that after all this time I would understand human nature better than most, but here is the thing.. where are peoples’ manners? The service we offer is free, is that the problem? Something that is free is of no value?

Now most people that I deal with are a delight, courteous, and actually quite grateful for the help that we give them, and, as always, it is the few that spoil it for every body else.. so my question is.. in this day and age of technology, mobile phones, texting, emails etc etc, why oh why do people not turn up for interview without letting us know?

How hard is it to call up and say I am sorry but I can not attend for ab or c reason.. we don’t bite! we don’t pressurise anyone to attend, do they not realise the effort that is involved in arranging an interview? Forget my time, this is what I do for a living, but our clients’ time is valuable, and more to the point there will be another person who would give their right arm for the opportunity.. so if anyone out there has an interview, remember, if you can not attend, let your agency or the business know… It is just a question of manners!

New addition to Alexander Hancock’s website is the introduction of our Blog.. I can’t tell you how exciting this is, those who know me well, will know that there is nothing I like better than a) a forum to air my views and b) a good discussion about those views! So please feel free to respond, discuss and argue to your hearts content.

I am hoping this blog will enlighten, interest and be fun but at the same time inform and help to do what we do best, which is find people jobs. So sometimes this will be a light hearted look at life within a Recruitment Agency and other times it will be a forum to advise and swop information to assist you in finding your ideal role.

I guess the only real area to discuss today is.. the new Government we have.. do we think a coalition will work, think it seems pretty good so far but are the Tories and the Liberals the best of partners? Personally just happy to have Lord Mandelson and Alistair Campbell off my TV for the time being! And of course I have a streak of blue that runs through my veins, so Cameron will do for me! Have a great weekend, Natalie
